Delivering better oral health: an evidence-based toolkit for prevention
A toolkit to support dental teams in improving their patient’s oral and general health.
BASCD has hosted a suite of masterclass sessions focussing on the 4th edition of Delivering Better Oral Health (2021) from a public health perspective.
There are four sessions, with each delivered by experts in the field who have contributed to the development of the Delivering Better Oral Health toolkit.

Session 1: INTRODUCTION AND BEHAVIOUR CHANGE

This session includes an introduction to the DBOH Toolkit provided by Dr Jenny Godson MBE, who led the work to deliver version 4 of DBOH. Prior to her retirement she was National Lead for Child Oral Health Improvement, PHE.
This will be followed by an overview of Behaviour Change related to DBOH given by Kara Gray-Burrows, Lecturer in Behavioural Sciences & Complex Intervention Methodology, School of Dentistry, University of Leeds, UK

Jenny Godson MBE BDS DDPH RCS (Eng) MDSc FFPH
Jenny has dedicated her career to oral health improvement. She was a
national lead for child oral health improvement in The Department of Health and Social Care's. Office of Health Improvement and Disparities.
Jenny has made many significant contributions to dentistry, including leading the development and publication of the 3rd and 4th editions of 'Delivering Better Oral Health'.
Kara Gray-Burrows PhD MSc BSc
Dr Kara Gray-Burrows is a Lecturer in Behavioural Sciences & Complex Intervention Methodology at the School of Dentistry, University of Leeds.
She is a Chartered psychologist and currently works with the paediatric research team to develop and evaluate preventive interventions for families to improve the oral health of young children.

Avijit Banerjee Hon. Consultant / Clinical Lead, Restorative Dentistry
Avijit Banerjee is Professor of Cariology & Operative Dentistry / Hon. Consultant and Clinical Lead, Restorative Dentistry at the Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences, King’s College London / Guy’s & St. Thomas’ Hospitals Foundation Trust, London, UK.
He holds the positions of Head of Conservative & MI Dentistry, Director of Education (UG) and Programme Director of the innovative KCL distance-learning Masters in Advanced Minimum Intervention Dentistry.
He also leads the Cariology & Operative Dentistry research programme, researching, publishing and lecturing internationally about MI operative caries management and adhesive dental biomaterials
He is editor-in-chief of Oral Health & Preventive Dentistry and an editorial board member of the Journal of Dental Research, Dental Update, British Dental Journal, International Journal of Adhesion & Adhesives, and the Primary Dental Journal. He is also a member of the British Dental Association Health & Science Committee, all whilst maintaining wet-fingered specialist clinical practice in Restorative Dentistry, Prosthodontics & Periodontics.
Ian Needleman Professor of Periodontology and Evidence-Informed Healthcare
Ian is Professor of Periodontology and Evidence-InformedHealthcare at University College London, Eastman Dental Institute, London UK. He leads the Centre for Oral Health and Performance (www.ucl.ac.uk/cohp) which was awarded recognition by the International Olympic Committee as part of the UK Research Centre for prevention of injury and protection of athlete health. He is also in specialist practice at PerioLondon. Ian is a Cochrane Editor for Periodontal Health.
His research has been awarded prizes by the European Federation of Periodontology, Royal Society of Medicine, German Periodontal Society, German Cochrane Centre and International Association for Dental Research. He was awarded the UCL Provost’s Prize for Institutional Leadership in Public Engagement in 2017 and nominated as an inspiring teacher by UCL in 2007. During the pandemic, Ian worked with ICU to develop a Family Liaison Team which received both the 2021 Intensive Care Society Improvement Project and the UCLH Top Quality Patient care awards.
Ian is a past president of the British Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry and was a member of the International Olympic Committee, Scientific Committee for the 2014 Conference on Prevention of Injury and Illness in Monaco and a Faculty member for 2017. He has been a member of many international consensus Workshops in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry.
Saoirse O'Toole Clinical Lecturer in Prosthodontics
Dr. Saoirse O’Toole is a Clinical Lecturer in Prosthodontics at King’s College London's Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Clinical Sciences.
Her research interests include identifying groups at high risk of tooth wear progression and developing practice-based methods to prevent and monitor tooth wear. This includes translational, clinical and laboratory methodologies in addition to behavioural research.
Dr O'Toole is currently focusing on the development of software to accurately quantify intraoral changes at a micron level. She is active in public and patient engagement and in increasing awareness about the condition.

John Morris Senior Lecturer/ Honorary consultant in Dental Public Health
John is a part-time Senior Lecturer/ Honorary consultant in Dental Public Health at Birmingham Dental School and a part-time GDP. John was previously with Public Health England and NHS commissioning organisations in the West Midlands.
Leigh Hunter Oral Health Coach
Leigh’s experience extends from hospital and community dental services, general health promotion, general, specialist, private and NHS dental practice, to education and training of dental and other health and professional care groups. This foundation supports her work clinically, and with Growing Smiles to help individuals and groups of all ages to identify risk indicators for oral health, enabling them to take control, and support them to improve their oral and overall health and well being.
Leigh was part of the DBOH guideline development group for dental caries and was involved with UK wide Mouth Care Matters End of Life steering group. As Principal of the School of Dental Hygiene at Queens University, Belfast she was involved in education and training for all dental team members at under and post graduate level and continues to be involved in education and training.
Leigh has particular interests in Minimal Intervention Dentistry, Periodontal therapy and Preventive dentistry. She regularly attends continuing education in the UK, Ireland and the USA and believes in providing quality, individually focused oral health care.
Alongside her oral health coaching business (Growing Smiles), Leigh continues to work in clinical dental practice and is a mental health first aider.
She is currently chair of BSPD,NI and is a member of ADI, BASCD, BSG, BSDOH, BSP, CGDent, and NOHPG.
Ruth Fairchild Registered Nutritionist
Ruth is highly experienced in all aspects of nutrition including oral and public health nutrition, healthy sustainable diets, product development and sensory analysis. A valued member of the Welsh assembly funded food industry centre, having contributed over £60,000 of EU Helix funding in the last 3 years via various food projects including food reformulation reducing sugar, fat and salt in products.
Ruth is an active researcher with over 30-refereed publications in the areas of oral public health nutrition and sustainable food. Her work has been presented at over 40 conferences in the UK and internationally.
Recognising the impact of her research work with Maria Morgan at Cardiff University Dental school she was awarded a Cardiff Metropolitan University readership in 2020. Her present research interests include investigating the barriers to parents reducing sugar intakes in their young children’s diets (ages 6 months – 5yrs) and collaborating with PHW investigating the possible role of cashless data systems in establishing the uptake of secondary school meal items and nutrients.
Session 4: ORAL CANCER, ALCOHOL, SMOKING & TOBACCO USE

Joss started her dental career in the Royal Navy. After nine years of service, she joined Confident Dental and Implant Clinic in Stroud, Gloucestershire, in 2007. Joss is a clinical ambassador for the Mouth Cancer Foundation and part of the working party updating the 2021 DBOH guidelines in the prevention and early detection of mouth cancer. Joss is part of the United Kingdom Oral Management in Cancer care group and the World Dental Federation consensus group. Joss organises an annual charity fundraising conference, 'Talking Mouths Talking Cancer Care', with passionate professionals alongside a patient presenting topics relating to cancer care.

Richard's research interests are translational in nature, spanning fundamental research to pragmatic clinical trials and public health research. He has a particular focus on tobacco and novel nicotine products and is currently conducting a large national multi-centre randomised controlled trial on smoking cessation interventions in primary dental care (The ENHANCE-D trial).
Dr Julia Csikar
Non Clinical Lecturer in Dental Public Health

Julia has undertaken Public Health roles within a variety of organisations including the NHS, Primary Care Trusts, Public Health England, and Academia. Her research interests are in brief interventions in dentistry for tobacco and alcohol and the oral health of vulnerable groups such as people experiencing homelessness and older people residing in care homes.
